Before you start
When product images are missing useful alternative text.
- ALT text describes an image. It is not a visible caption or a list of keywords.
- One successful ALT generation costs 1 credit per image, not per product.
- Check whether the action creates drafts or generates and publishes automatically.
Steps to follow
- Open Image ALT. Check Catalog status and the Missing Alt Text filter.
- Select images or use the action for all missing ALT text. Check the full image count.
- Review the estimate and publication mode, then start generation.
- Follow Jobs for a queued operation.
- In draft mode, check the descriptions and publish the ready results. In automatic mode, inspect the publication outcome and a sample of images.
For example
Ten products with four images each can require 40 ALT descriptions and 40 credits if every image generates successfully.
What happens next
Drafts do not change Shopify until published. An automatic publication operation can write the generated ALT text directly.
A useful tip. Check that descriptions match the specific image, including its view, color and visible details.
Take care. Do not claim a material, feature or certification that the image and product information do not support.
Common questions
What about images that already have ALT text?
The all-missing action targets missing ALT. Do not assume an explicit action on selected images can never replace existing text; read its scope and confirmation.
Why can I not see ALT as text under the picture?
ALT is an image attribute used when the image cannot be seen and by assistive technology. It is not normally a visible caption.
Can I keep using the app during a job?
An accepted queued job can be followed in Jobs. A catalog sync is a different operation; follow the instruction it displays.
If you are still stuck
- If an image was deleted or replaced in Shopify, refresh the workspace before retrying text for the old image.
